The Ultimate 2026 Detroit River Walleye Jigging Guide
With Captain Dan of Chromeseekers
The Detroit River is the walleye capital of the world. Every spring, millions of walleye flood the river from Lake Erie, creating the most intense vertical jigging action on the planet. Whether you are a seasoned "river rat" or a first-timer, this guide will get you dialed in for the 2026 season.
1. Timing the Run: When to Be Here
• Late March – Early April: This is "Trophy Time." The numbers are lower, but the fish are massive. If you want a 10lb+ post-spawn female, this is your window.
• Mid-April – Early June: The Peak. The "masses" of walleye are in the river. It’s common to see limits reached in under an hour during this window.
2. The Setup: Gear for Success
Vertical jigging in 4–5 mph current requires specific gear. If your rod is too soft, you won't feel the "thud."
• The Rod: 6'0" to 6'6" Medium to Medium-Heavy power with an Extra-Fast action.
• The Line: 8lb to 10lb Hi-Vis Braid. The high visibility helps you see your line stay vertical, and the zero-stretch braid ensures you feel every pebble on the bottom.
• The Leader: 18–24 inches of 8lb or 10lb fluorocarbon.
3. The Jigging Technique: "Stay Vertical"
The #1 rule on the Detroit River: If you aren't vertical, you aren't fishing.
• Use your electric trolling motor to match the speed of the current exactly.
• Your line should go straight down. if it's at an angle, you'll snag the bottom or miss the subtle "tick" of a walleye bite.
• The Cadence: Lift the jig 3–6 inches off the bottom and let it "thump" back down. Most bites happen on the fall!
4. 2026 Hot Colors & Plastics
• Water Clarity is Key: * Dirty/Stained Water: Go bright. Chartreuse, "Antifreeze," Orange, or Pink.
• Clear Water: Natural tones. Brown/Black "Wyandotte Worms," White, or Silver.
• Weights: 3/4oz, 1oz and even 2 oz jigs in your box. Use the lightest weight possible that still allows you to "feel" the bottom.
5. Regulations & Limits
• Daily Limit: 6 Walleye per person.
• Minimum Size: 15 inches.
• License: Ensure you have a valid Michigan fishing license. If you cross the shipping channel into Canadian waters, an Ontario license is required.
